I’ve been a professional coach, counselor, and advisor for more than three decades. I’m pleased that I’ve been able to get many folks to make healthy choices that they probably wouldn’t have made if left to their own devices. I help people get fitter, happier, and healthier mainly by:

  • coaching with compassion and conviction
  • making exercise fun
  • creating connections and community

I wasn’t a born athlete. My long journey from bespectacled nerd to fitness instructor has taught me that we’re all capable of being fit and that exercise is so much more effective when it’s creative and fun. Just say no to mindless repetitions in a soulless gym.

I’m convinced that fitness is for everyone. Given the right approach and the right coaching, we can all enjoy movement and benefit from it.

I started out as a skinny nerd. But with a little hard work, faith, and dedication, I transformed myself into an athlete. As the years have gone by, I’ve had to contend with some not-so-pleasant things like injuries and aging, but through it all, I’ve always found a way to stay active, even if that meant modifying my workouts. Becoming fit and adopting a vegan lifestyle has changed my life for the better to such an extent that I decided to become a fitness coach so I could share what I’ve learned with anybody who wants to listen.

My approach is to meet people right where they are and to never judge. I want you to feel great about yourself as you are, but also want you to realize your potential to feel even better. And, most importantly, I want you to have fun! At Punk Rope I tell new students that they’re not “exercising,” they’re just rocking out with a jump rope in their hands. And sometimes they’re playing tag or hot potato, or pretending to be William Wallace with a foam sword, or perhaps they’re jumping like a kangaroo. My goal is to get you to sweat with a big, old smile. And while Beastanetics might sound scary, I’ve tried to create an environment that is as non-threatening as can be. Sure the class is challenging, but with non-stop encouragement and constant high fives, most people find it surprisingly enjoyable.

I have three other passions that I’d like to share with you:

  • building community
  • giving back
  • listening to music

Since my early days of coaching I’ve been all about helping my students feel connected. I don’t coach individuals. I coach teams. And good teams are close-knit. We go on pizza crawls; we visit museums; we compete in races; and we kick back at happy hour. Over the years I’ve organized hundreds of gatherings for my students and, as a result, countless friendships—and some romantic relationships—have been formed. I encourage my students to share with their teammates what they’ve got going on: from music and DJ gigs to burlesque performances to crafts fairs to poetry readings to art exhibits to charity events.

Speaking of charity, I believe in giving back and hope you do too. Helping those who are less fortunate than us makes the world a better place. We’ve participated in more charity efforts than I can remember, but some memorable ones include fundraisers to fight childhood obesity, and to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami of 2011, and typhoon Haiyan.

And finally, there’s music. Where would we be without music? I know I’d be nowhere. I’ve been going to lives shows since 1976 and I hope I never stop. Each week, for more than a decade, I’ve created a new themed playlist for Punk Rope, and as a result, music lovers and musicians flock to the class. Sure we listen to punk rock, but also to funk, hip hop, jazz, ska, reggae, salsa, merengue, samba, blues, classical, electronica, disco, and more. And when Beastanetics goes indoors during the colder months, my students create special playlists that help everybody keep up the intensity. I LOVE music!

Well that’s me in a nutshell. Sorry for rambling. I even left out some stuff. I’d love to hear from you. If you want to chat about fitness or music or whatever definitely contact me.
